Ice Maker Not Working? Causes, Fixes and When to Call a Pro

Your ice maker stopped making ice, and now you are stuck buying bags of it. The good news: most ice maker problems come down to a handful of simple causes, and several of them you can fix yourself in a few minutes. Here is what is really going on, how to fix it by brand, what a repair costs, and when it is time to call a technician.

Quick answer: An ice maker usually stops working for one of five reasons: the freezer is too warm (it needs to sit at 0 to 5°F), the water line or fill tube is frozen, the shut-off arm or switch is in the off position, the water filter is clogged, or the water inlet valve has failed. Start by checking the freezer temperature and the shut-off arm, then the filter. If water reaches the dispenser but no ice forms, the ice maker assembly itself is the likely culprit. Why your ice maker stopped working

These are the common causes, roughly in the order you should check them:

  • The freezer is too warm. An ice maker needs the freezer at 0 to 5°F. If it drifted warmer, it will not cycle. Overpacking the freezer or a failing seal is often behind this.
  • The shut-off arm or switch is off. Every ice maker has a wire arm or a small on and off switch. It gets bumped to off, or the arm gets stuck up on a bag of food, and the unit simply pauses.
  • The fill tube is frozen. A thin line of water refreezes in the fill tube and blocks new water from reaching the tray. This is one of the most common causes, and often the easiest to fix.
  • The water filter is clogged. A filter overdue for replacement chokes the water flow. Most filters should be swapped every six months.
  • The water inlet valve failed. This valve opens to let water in. When it fails, you get no ice and sometimes no water at the dispenser either.
  • The ice maker module itself died. The motor, thermostat, or control inside the assembly can fail, and then the whole unit needs replacing.

Quick fixes to try before you call

  1. Check the shut-off arm or switch is in the on position and nothing is blocking the arm.
  2. Confirm the freezer temperature is at 0 to 5°F. Give it a few hours to recover if you just adjusted it.
  3. Thaw a frozen fill tube. Turn the ice maker off, unplug the fridge or shut its water off, and warm the fill tube gently with a hair dryer on low or a cup of warm water. Do not force ice out with a sharp tool.
  4. Replace the water filter if it has been more than six months.
  5. Reset the ice maker. Turn it off for 10 minutes, or hold the reset button if your model has one, then give it 24 hours to make a fresh batch.

If none of that brings the ice back, the inlet valve or the ice maker assembly is likely the problem, and that is a job for a technician.

Ice maker not working, by brand

Each brand has its own usual suspect:

Whirlpool ice maker not working

Whirlpool units (and the Kenmore and Maytag models built on the same design) most often fail at the optical sensor or the control module. Confirm the wire arm is down in the on position, try the reset, and if it still will not cycle, the module is the usual replacement.

Samsung ice maker not working

Samsung French-door refrigerators are well known for the ice compartment frosting over and jamming. The fix is usually a full defrost of the ice room (some models have a “Force Defrost” mode), then a reset. If it keeps freezing over, the assembly or the defrost part often needs replacing.

LG ice maker not working

On LG refrigerators, check the ice maker on and off switch first, then the fill tube for ice. LG craft-ice and dual-ice models add a second unit, so confirm which one has stopped. A failed assembly is the common repair.

Frigidaire ice maker not working

Frigidaire units most often trip up on a frozen fill tube or a tired water inlet valve. Thaw the tube first. If water is not reaching the tray at all, the valve is the likely fix.

How much does an ice maker repair cost?

Most ice maker repairs are affordable compared to a new refrigerator:

Repair Typical cost
Thaw a frozen fill tube Often the cheapest, sometimes a service call only
Water inlet valve $120 to $250
New ice maker assembly $150 to $350 installed
Samsung ice room defrost repair $180 to $400

A good technician gives you the price before starting. For the full picture, see our refrigerator repair cost guide and the Michigan appliance repair cost guide.

When to call a technician

Call a pro when the freezer is at the right temperature, the arm is on, and the fill tube is clear but you still have no ice. That points to the inlet valve, the wiring, or the ice maker module, which need proper diagnosis. It is also worth a call if the ice maker keeps freezing over after every defrost, since that usually means a part has failed rather than a one-off jam. If the freezer itself is not holding temperature, read why a fridge runs warm while the freezer stays cold first, because a cooling fault will stop ice production too.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my ice maker not working?

Most often the freezer is too warm (it needs 0 to 5°F), the fill tube or water line is frozen, or the shut-off arm is in the off position. Check those first, then the water filter and the inlet valve.

How do I reset my ice maker?

Turn it off at the control arm or power switch for 10 minutes, or hold the reset button if your model has one, until it cycles. Then give it about 24 hours to make a fresh batch of ice.

Why is my ice maker not making ice but the water dispenser works?

That usually points to a frozen fill tube or a failed ice maker module. If water reaches the dispenser but no ice forms, the water supply is fine and the ice maker assembly is the likely cause.

How much does it cost to fix an ice maker?

A new ice maker assembly typically runs $150 to $350 installed, and a water inlet valve is $120 to $250. Thawing a frozen fill tube is often the cheapest fix.

Is it worth repairing an ice maker?

Usually yes, because the repair is a small fraction of the cost of a new refrigerator. If the fridge is under about 10 years old, fixing the ice maker or valve is well worth it.

Can I fix my ice maker myself?

Some parts yes, such as thawing a frozen fill tube, replacing the filter, or resetting the unit. Leave the inlet valve, the wiring, and the module replacement to a technician.
